Homemade Bannock Recipe – A Traditional and Easy Bread
Bannock is a simple yet delicious bread that has been a staple in Indigenous and Scottish cuisine for centuries. It’s easy to make, requires minimal ingredients, and can be cooked in a pan, oven, or even over an open fire. Whether you enjoy it plain, with butter, or as a base for sweet or savory toppings, this homemade Bannock recipe will surely satisfy.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons butter or oil
- ¾ cup water or milk
Instructions:
Step 1: Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir well to evenly distribute the ingredients.
Step 2: Add Fat
Cut in the butter (or mix in the oil) until the mixture has a crumbly texture. This helps create a soft and flaky Bannock.
Step 3: Add Liquid
Slowly pour in the water or milk while stirring. Mix until a soft dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour. If it’s too dry, add a bit more water.
Step 4: Shape the Dough
Lightly flour a clean surface and knead the dough gently for a minute. Shape it into a round disk about ½ inch thick.
Step 5: Cook the Bannock
- Pan-fried Method: Heat a lightly greased pan over medium heat. Cook the dough for about 5-7 minutes on each side until golden brown and cooked through.
- Oven Method: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Place the dough on a greased baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
- Campfire Method: Flatten the dough and wrap it around a stick or cook it on a hot stone near the fire, turning occasionally.
Step 6: Serve and Enjoy
Let the Bannock cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm with butter, jam, honey, or even alongside soups and stews.
Tips for the Best Bannock:
- For a sweeter version, add 1-2 tablespoons of sugar.
- Add herbs, cheese, or dried fruit for extra flavor.
- If making over a fire, ensure even heat for thorough cooking.
